Crosscut Saw Guides
- Norman Pirollo
I invested some time in developing two simple to make crosscut guides. The guides work with either a backsaw or Japanese saws. They are oriented towards Japanese pull-type saws with thin saw plates and fine teeth. I was striving towards precise and smooth 90d and 45d crosscuts without the need for shooting afterwards. The crosscut guides attach to a board and essentially function similar to a bench hook but for longer boards. They provide consistent results after testing with several several Japanese saws I own. Perfect and precise saw cuts are critical to making woodworking joints. Use these simple saw guides and Japanese saws to cross cut square and miter cuts at 45d, fine cuts for your woodworking joinery. In hand tool woodworking, perfect saw cuts are a must to create the tight joinery for your furniture making and woodworking. You can easily and precisely trim ends of boards down to size without further work necessary.
The second crosscut guide is set at 45d and functions similarly to the 90d version described above. Now you can make precise miter saw cuts using this simple to make saw guide and a woodworking hand saw. Precision miter saw cuts are critical to woodworking joints. Use this simple hand saw guide and Japanese saw to cut mitered ends for your woodworking joinery. In hand tool woodworking, precise miter saw cuts are a must to create the tight joinery for your furniture making and woodworking. Easily and precisely create either 45d or other angles on ends of boards without further work necessary using this woodworking jig. Both crosscut guides are very inexpensive to make with only a little time invested and some offcuts. There is a strip of sandpaper applied to the bearing surface that contacts the board to provide friction. This keeps the guide from shifting to the left or right while sawing.
I enjoyed working on this project and developing these crosscut saw guides. They will prove to be beneficial in my hand tool woodworking. I aim for precise work directly off of hand tools without the need to use a machine to complete the process. The crosscut saw guides are easy to re-create if damaged and this was one of the criteria. Since there are saw teeth that will be in contact with the face of the saw guides, although very lightly, I expect wear over time. Re-creating them easily and with offcuts was one of the goals in the development.
